When iCloud is full of videos, clean up on your Mac
When iCloud is full, Photos, backups, and sharing start to fail. Videos in the Photos library are usually the reason — and the fix is on the Mac, by real file size, not on the iCloud website.
What “iCloud storage full” is actually blocking
The alert is easy to ignore until something else breaks. New photos stop uploading. Device backups pause. Shared albums stall. iCloud Drive files sit in a queue. The Photos library on your Mac still looks like a grid of days and people, so it is tempting to treat the warning as a billing problem rather than a content problem.
For many Mac users the content problem is video. 4K clips, screen recordings, and imported movies consume gigabytes each. Stills add up slowly; a single forgotten recording can add tens of gigabytes overnight. If the plan filled after a trip, a conference, or a stretch of screen recording, look at videos first.
albumlean is a Mac app for that look: open the Photos library you authorize, sort videos by real file size, and clean up locally so iCloud has less to store. It is not a generic “free up iCloud” guide, and it is not a walkthrough of the iCloud website.
The wrong path, in brief
Deleting a few stills, turning Photos options on and off, or removing thumbnails in a browser rarely moves the number that matters. Optimized local copies can make a clip look small on this Mac while the original still occupies iCloud. Guessing from the website is how people delete the wrong week of photos and still have a full plan.
This page will not walk through iCloud.com. If the videos live in Photos, the reliable place to inspect real file size is the Mac that already has the library. Clean up there, then let Photos and iCloud Photos sync the result. Turning iCloud Photos off to “save space” is a different, easy-to-regret decision — it is not a substitute for deleting the clips you do not need.
The right path: largest videos, on this Mac
On the Mac, you want a list of Photos videos ordered by real bytes. That is what albumlean opens with. The top of the list is usually a short set of obvious offenders: a long screen recording, a 4K import, a duplicate of a clip you already kept. Preview, select, and move them to Recently Deleted through Photos.
Space does not always return in the same second you confirm. Recently Deleted still counts until it is emptied or the retention window ends. iCloud then has to sync the deletion. Accounts, libraries, and network conditions differ, so this page does not promise an instant number on a web dashboard. The sequence is still the same: remove the heavy videos locally, then wait for Photos and iCloud to catch up.
If you need the mechanical steps — download, authorize, sort, preview, Recently Deleted — they are spelled out in finding large videos in Photos on a Mac. Use that page for the product path; use this one to stay off the website-shaped dead ends.
Where albumlean fits
albumlean is a native Mac utility for videos in your Photos library. It sorts by real file size, flags size-matched duplicates, and keeps unknown-size iCloud-only items out of the way instead of pretending they are empty. Scanning runs on the Mac. There is no albumlean account and no upload of your library.
Deletion is still Photos’ job. After you confirm, items go to Recently Deleted, recoverable for about 30 days. If iCloud Photos is enabled, that deletion can reach the iPhone and iPad signed in with the same Apple Account. That is why the app asks first, and why you should preview anything you are not sure about.
The current download is free while paid checkout is being prepared. Pricing describes the planned monthly and lifetime options; nothing here starts a subscription.
What to expect after you delete
Local free space and iCloud free space are related, not identical clocks. Emptying Recently Deleted on a Mac with iCloud Photos on is usually what makes the plan move. If a clip was iCloud-only, Photos may download it when you preview or export — that is Apple’s library at work, not albumlean sending files to a server.
If the library is full of copies rather than a few giants, pair this cleanup with removing duplicate videos. Extra imports and extra screen recordings often waste as much as a single huge file.
Do not expect this page — or the app — to publish a live iCloud meter. Check the plan after sync has had time to run. If something important was moved by mistake, restore it from Recently Deleted in Photos while the window is still open.
