How to Reduce Your Photos Library Size on Mac
The Photos library on a Mac grows in layers: originals, edits, screenshots, Live Photos, and video. The grid hides that. This page diagnoses Photos Library.photoslibrary as a whole — measure it, clear the cheap waste, then deal with videos, which are usually the gigabytes. albumlean is the local tool for that video slice only: real file size, same-size duplicate videos, and a move into Recently Deleted. Nothing is uploaded.
Why your Photos library keeps growing
What you see in Photos is a grid of days, people, and albums. What sits on the disk is a package, usually named Photos Library.photoslibrary, in the Pictures folder. Inside it are originals, the edited versions Photos keeps beside them, thumbnails, and whatever iCloud Photos has downloaded to this Mac. A library can look modest while the package is tens or hundreds of gigabytes. Those are different questions, and only one of them is a storage question.
iCloud settings change which of those bytes live on the Mac. Download Originals keeps full files locally, so the package tracks the real library. Optimize Mac Storage is allowed to keep smaller stand-ins on this Mac while the full item stays in iCloud. The package can then shrink without deleting anything from the plan you pay for. Neither setting tells you which items are responsible, and neither one is a list you can sort.
When people finally sort a library by what actually weighs something, the order is boring and consistent. Videos — 4K clips, screen recordings, imported movies — outweigh RAW stills and screenshots. Exact duplicate photos are real, and worth merging, but they are rarely the main event. Start with that ranking so you do not spend an evening on stills and free a rounding error while a single recording still holds forty gigabytes.
Measure first (don’t guess)
Before you delete anything, write down two numbers. In Finder, open your home folder, then Pictures, select Photos Library.photoslibrary, and choose File → Get Info. The size on disk is the package this Mac is storing. If you keep more than one library, measure the one Photos is actually opening, not a leftover copy from a migration you forgot about.
Then open System Settings → General → Storage and look at the Photos category. It is a second view of the same problem, not a contradiction when the two numbers differ. Optimized libraries, purgeable space, and a package Photos still has open can all make the figures lag one another. You want a before-and-after pair so a later cleanup has something honest to beat.
Do not try to get a smarter number by opening the package and adding up files in Finder. That folder is the database, not a drawer of movies you are meant to prune. The useful measurement is the package size, plus a list of videos by real file size when you are ready for the heavy part. Keep the first Get Info figure. You will compare it after Recently Deleted is actually empty.
Quick wins that don’t need a new app
A few Photos controls return space without new software. They do not replace a video pass. They do stop you buying a disk or another iCloud tier before the obvious waste is gone. Remeasure only after the last of these has actually finished.
Empty Recently Deleted
Deleting in Photos does not free the bytes. The item sits in Recently Deleted, usually for about 30 days, and still counts. Review that album and empty it when you are sure. Until you do, Get Info looks like the cleanup failed. Every later method on this page ends in the same album.
Built-in Duplicates
On macOS Ventura and later, Utilities → Duplicates collects exact duplicate photos and videos. A large library takes time to analyze; an empty album in the first minute proves nothing. Select a row and Merge so Photos keeps one item and sends the extras to Recently Deleted, then empty that album. Merge is for pairs Photos already found, not for a burst of similar shots. Stills are covered in deleting duplicate photos on Mac.
Cull screenshots and bursts
Screenshots, receipts, and burst frames are small alone and large as a pile. Media Types and search in Photos will surface screenshots. Delete what you do not need, then empty Recently Deleted. Ten near-identical frames are not ten backups, and a similar-photo app should not make that call for you. If the decision is about stills, use the duplicate-photos guide.
Optimize Mac Storage
With iCloud Photos on, Optimize Mac Storage can keep smaller copies on this Mac and drop the package size. This Mac may not have the original offline, and the iCloud plan still holds it. Optimizing is not deleting, and it does not shrink a video-heavy plan. When the plan is full of video, read what to do when iCloud is full of videos and remove the clips.
Where the gigabytes usually hide: videos
A 4K clip, a long screen recording, or an imported movie dwarfs a day of HEIC stills. A library that feels huge because of HEIC is often huge because of video or RAW. Live Photos add a short movie to a still, which rarely dominates. Edited stills keep an original beside the edit. That explains some bloat, not a hundred gigabytes.
Photos will not sort videos by real file size. albumlean reads the library you authorize, lists videos largest first, and labels unknown sizes instead of treating them as empty. Videos with exactly the same byte size are grouped as duplicate videos. You preview, then the app asks Photos to move your selection to Recently Deleted. No upload and no account.
The product path is on finding large videos in Photos on Mac and deleting duplicate videos on Mac. Clear Recently Deleted, obvious still junk, and exact photo duplicates if you want — then spend the real time on video, which is where the package usually moves.
Biggest wins are usually videos.
Download albumlean, scan by real file size, and move duplicate or large clips to Recently Deleted. The scan stays on this Mac. Nothing is uploaded.
What not to do
Do not open Photos Library.photoslibrary and delete files inside it. Photos will not update its index, Recently Deleted will not have a copy, and iCloud Photos will not treat it as a normal removal. Repairing a library is worse than emptying an album.
Do not move the package onto a Time Machine volume, a USB flash drive, an SD card, or a network or cloud mount. Apple’s guidance is a Mac-formatted drive — APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) — and explicitly not the backup disk. The safe version of that move is moving the Photos library to an external drive, after the video pass.
If iCloud Photos is on, clean up on one device. Deletions from the System Photo Library can sync to the iPhone and iPad on the same Apple Account, including into Recently Deleted. Hunting on every device is how people restore on one and delete on another. Wait for sync, then remeasure once.
After cleanup checklist
Empty Recently Deleted after you review it. Quit Photos and run Get Info again. Compare that number with the one you wrote down. Storage in System Settings should move the same way once categories update. With iCloud Photos on, the plan follows sync and need not match the package in the same minute.
If the package is still larger than the internal disk can spare, move it — do not keep deleting stills at random. Merge repeated stills you have not touched yet. If the weight is still video, go back to a real-size sort. Pricing describes the planned paid release. The current Mac download does not charge or ask for an account.
- Empty Recently Deleted, then recheck Get Info on the package.
- Merge exact photo duplicates only where Photos has already paired them.
- Sort videos by real size before you buy a larger disk or a larger iCloud tier.
- If the library must leave the internal SSD, move the whole package. Do not copy files out of it.
FAQ
Does Optimize Mac Storage delete photos forever?
No. This Mac may keep smaller copies while originals stay in iCloud, so a full plan stays full. Deleting an item and emptying Recently Deleted is what removes it. Optimize when the Mac’s disk is tight and you accept depending on iCloud. Delete when you do not want the item at all.
Will deletes sync to my iPhone?
If iCloud Photos is on and this is the System Photo Library, deletions can sync to other devices on the Apple Account, usually into Recently Deleted there for about 30 days. If iCloud Photos is off, the delete stays on this library. One careful pass on the Mac is enough. Preview anything you are unsure about.
Why did the size not drop yet?
Recently Deleted still counts until you empty it or the retention window ends. iCloud’s number moves after Photos syncs, not when you click. Optimizing the Mac also does not shrink the iCloud plan, and deleting stills leaves a 40 GB screen recording untouched. Remeasure the package and sort videos by real file size before you assume the cleanup missed.
Can albumlean shrink the whole library by itself?
It only manages videos already in Photos: real file size, same-byte-size duplicate videos, then a move to Recently Deleted through Photos. It does not delete duplicate still photos, empty Recently Deleted, or upload the library. Screenshots, RAW, Live Photos, and moving the package stay your decisions.
Biggest wins are usually videos.
Download albumlean for Mac, scan videos by real file size, and remove duplicate or oversized clips locally. No account and no upload. The current download is free while paid options are prepared.
